Maximizing Opportunities – A Five-Step Approach to a Successful You!

According to Walter P. Chrysler, “the reason so many people never get anywhere in life is that when opportunity knocks, they are out in the backyard looking for four-leaf clovers”. While it is believed that four-leaf clovers bring good luck, with a frequency of approximately 1 in 5000, the rarity of it makes the search more of a wild goose chase than a deliberate and intentional venture. To maximize opportunities, you must be deliberate and intentional! You have to develop certain skills and proclivities that will prepare and position you for the opportunities you seek to maximize, and for other unforeseen opportunities that will be attracted to you because of your level of preparedness.

Since, according to Kyle Chandler, “opportunity does not knock; it presents itself when you beat down the door”, wouldn’t it make absolute sense therefore to equip yourself with the skills and tools to “beat down the door”? In this post, we will look at some of those skills you need to, not only prepare yourself to maximize opportunities, but also to beat down barriers behind which opportunities may be hiding. These skills and tools include, but are not limited to the following.

Developing Analytical and Predictive Skills

The ability to understand the full scope of a situation is the first important step towards developing effective strategies in dealing with it. Having analytical and predictive skills allows you to evaluate situations, both simple and complex. With analytical and predictive skills comes other inherent skills, like attention to detail, critical thinking ability, decision-making, and researching skills to analyze a situation and reach a solution, skills which are crucial for identifying and capitalizing on opportunities. By developing these skills, you will be better equipped to recognize and harness opportunities.

Time and Self-Management Skills

According to Stephen R. Covey, “if you start to think the problem is “out there,” stop yourself. That thought is the problem”. The problem, most times, is “in here”. Your ability to organize yourself and your time is crucial for your personal as well as the job-related success. Time is a limited resource and wasting it on unimportant tasks can prevent you from taking advantage of important opportunities. Self-management implies your ability to prioritize tasks and remain focused, even in the face of distractions. By mastering your time and self, you will be able to make the most of your available resources and seize opportunities as they arise.
